(Dr. Agrawal, is foreign residency trainee who graduated from Nepal Medical College. She finished the 3-year Residency Program in Internal Medicine and represented their batch of Foreign Trainee-graduates on the occasion of the Rizal Medical Center Graduation Ceremonies.)

“So you are from Nepal, have you climbed Mt. Everest?”  This is the most common question I get …… How am I supposed to answer when it boggles me all the time?  So, what do I do?  I soon started answering  with a rhetorical question.

“Have you ever swum across the West Philippine Sea?”

          Last October 12, 2016, Rizal Medical Center had its annual research contest and interesting case presentations. Each representative from the different departments prepared their respective cases and research; as for the rest of the co-residents and interns, they gathered around the auditorium with their own banners to root for their best bets.

          Dr. Henry H. Ho from Department of Anesthesiology presented a paper on Wound Infiltration Using Levobupivacaine in Surgical Exploratory Laparotomy Preocedures: A Randomized Double-Blind Placebo Controlled Trial. Dr. Adeluisa Mae De Guzman-Besin from the Department of Pediatrics made a presentation on the Effectiveness of 120 Days School based Feeding Program Among Kinder 1 to Grade 6 of Brgy. Pineda Elementary School from September 2015- March 2016. Dr. Carl Chester L. Go discussed his paper on Correlation between (HER2) Human Epidermal Growth Receptor-2 Over Expression and Nuclear Atypia Among Patients Diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma at Rizal Medical Center, of which won first place. Meanwhile, in regards to research presentations, Dr. Elaine Joy O. Viernes presented her research work, When the gut rules the heart: A case of Congenital Diaphragmatic Hernia. Yours truly presented a case study entitled From achy joints to my breaky heart: A case on Chikungunya infection. Dr. Ivan Adrian L. De Guzman talked about The thigh in my mind: A case of Alveolar Soft Part Sarcoma in a 34 year old male presenting with a two-month history of dizziness in his presentation. And lastly, Dr. Benedick B. Borbe had presented his material, An unusual facial mass: A case report on Extramedullary plasmacytoma on the Parotid Gland, which won first place.

          The different departments at Rizal Medical Center are assigned to conduct activities each month in celebration of the institution’s 75th Anniversary. The Nursing Division rocked the month of October as they facilitated different events. The division started the monthlong celebration with a parade last October 3, 2016 at 6:00 a.m. The parade was directed by the nursing council and led by the Chief Nursing Officer, Dr. Louise Marie D. Flores. The nurses walked around the hospital visiting every ward. The parade ended at the RMC Auditorium and as a treat for everyone, free taho was given to the employees of RMC.

          Environmental problems such as global warming have greatly affected the health of the people. Numerous cases of heat stroke, severe dehydration, electrolyte imbalance and the like were recorded. In lined with this, the Association of Health Administrators, Inc. (AHA) had their 2016 Midyear Convention with the theme “Hospitals in the Midst of Global Warming.” This event took place in Alona Kew White Beach Resort in Panglao, Bohol last June 8 to 9, 2016. It was participated in by the different Chiefs of Hospitals/Medical Center Chiefs from the different DOH-retained hospitals and Treatment Rehabilitation Centers, as well as their Division Chiefs (Chief Nurses, Chief Administrative Officers, Finance Management Officers and Chief of Clinics).

The 2016 Midyear Convention of AHAAHA President Dr. Relito M. Saquilayan (at the center) together with Dr. Louise Marie D. Flores, Dr. Noel C. Santos, Dr. Karen O. Bongas, Ms. Marivilla L. Osorio, Dr. Primo B. Valenzuela and Ms. Rizza A. De Vera at the 2016 AHA Midyear Convention in Bohol.

          Dr. Relito M. Saquilayan (Medical Center Chief II, Rizal Medical Center) stands as the current President of AHA. Together with Dr. Saquilayan were representatives from Rizal Medical Center namely: Dr. Louise Marie D. Flores (Chief Nurse), Dr. Primo B. Valenzuela (Chief Training Officer), Ms. Marivilla L. Osorio (Chief Finance Officer), Dr. Karen O. Bongas (Deputy Quality Management Representative), Dr. Noel C. Santos (Residency Program Training Officer), and Ms. Rizza A. De Vera (Secretariat).
