Yes, giving is always in the heart of the staff of Rizal Medical Center, as they participated in Happy Bloodentines Day!, a blood donation drive for the benefit of pediatric patients held last November 24, 2015 at RMC Blood Bank, from 8AM to 5PM.
Everyone was enthusiastic. One of the first time donors recounted “ang saya po pala mag-donate ng dugo”, while one of the unsuccessful donors sadly uttered: “Buti pa sila nakapagdonate, sila na bayani, ako hindi”. Out of a total of 48 screened possible donors, 28 were successful donors.
Donating blood gives the donor many rewards. One, it replenishes blood cells; after donating blood, you replace the fluid in hours and the red blood cells within four weeks. It takes eight weeks to restore the iron lost after donating. Two, it is a great weight loss program. According to studies, donating blood on a regular basis, can improve fitness. Donating one pint of blood (450ml) burns 650 calories in the donor’s body. Three, it reduces the risk of cancer. Four, it also reduces the risk of heart diseases. Five, blood drive brings all friends together. Each person cheers his friend while donating. And most of all, the joy of donating blood is gratifying and incomparable.
There is no substitute for human blood. About 1 in 7 people entering a hospital need blood. One pint of blood (450ml) can save up to three lives. If you begin at age 17 and donate every 56 days until you reach 79 years old, you could donate about 46.5 gallons.
Giving blood will not decrease your strength. In a word, blood donation, which is about an hour of your time, is about life.
Happy Bloodentines day! Is a semi-annual blood drive activity of the Department of Pediatrics, all for love of pedia patients. See you next Happy Bloodentines Day!

“A customer is the most important visitor on our premises. He is not dependent on us. We are dependent on him. He is not an interruption of our work. He is the purpose of it. He is not an outsider of our business. He is part of it. We are not doing him a favour by serving him. He is doing us a favour by giving us the opportunity to do so.”
