      The Department of Surgery of Rizal Medical Center is an emerging leader in providing holistic surgical care to the Filipino people.  We are the preferred end-referral hospital in eastern NCR as well as the CALABARZON area.  Through the years, we have continually evolved and adapted to the changing times, garnering various and indispensable competencies that are distinct to the department.  We are equipped to give our patients competent, competitive, and conscientious care through the different surgical sections that function under the department.

      The department carries two surgical wards that are capable of admitting and serving over a hundred patients.  Our department also takes pride in having different subspecialty sections such as Head and Neck Surgery, Breast and Surgical Oncology, Colorectal Surgery, Minimally Invasive Surgery and Surgical Endoscopy, Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery, Orthopedics, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Neurosurgery, Urology, Thoracocardiovascular and Pediatric Surgery. 

 

DEPARTMENT OF SURGERY SERVICES OFFERED

HEAD AND NECK

·         Fine needle biopsy of anterior neck masses

·         Thyroidectomy

·         Parotidectomy

·         Maxillectomy/Mandibulectomy

·         Tracheostomy

Includes assessment, evaluation, and surgical management of anterior neck masses and any mass from the neck upwards

BREAST AND SURGICAL ONCOLOGY

·         Mastectomy (total/partial/radical)

·         Breast conservation surgery

·         Soft tissue tumor resections

Includes assessment, evaluation, and management (surgical versus medical) of breast masses as well as any imaging- or biopsy-proven soft tissue mass

UPPER GASTROINTESTINAL SURGERY

·         Esophagogastric surgery (resection, tube insertions)

·         Management of caustic ingestions

Includes surgical management of a variety of pathologies involving the esophagus and stomach

COLORECTAL/HERNIA

·         Appendectomy (open/laparoscopic)

·         Colonoscopy

·         Colectomy (partial/subtotal/total)

·         Colostomy creation

·         Hemorrhoidectomy

·         Anorectal fistula or abscess surgery

Includes initial assessment, evaluation, and/or management (surgical versus medical) of a variety of pathologies involving the small and large bowels as well as those involving the rectum and anal canal

SURGICAL ENDOSCOPY

·         EGD/duodenoscopy/colonoscopy

·         Endoscopic ultrasound

·         Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography

·         Endoscopic retrograde appendicitis therapy

Includes initial assessment and evaluation of pathologies involving any part of the gastrointestinal tract from the esophagus up to the duodenum, often including the biliary tree, which may involve both diagnostic and therapeutic intervention at time of procedure

HEPATOPANCREATOBILIARY SURGERY

·         Cholecystectomy (open/laparoscopic)

·         Pancreatoduodenectomy

·         Biliary-enteric bypass procedure

·         Liver surgery

·         Percutaneous transbiliary drainage (PTBD)

Includes initial assessment, evaluation, and management (surgical versus medical) of a variety of diseases involving the hepatobiliary tree and the pancreas, ranging from benign causes to malignant tumors

MINIMALLY INVASIVE/BARIATRIC SURGERY

·         Endoscopic thyroidectomy

·         Laparoscopic appendectomy

·         Laparoscopic cholecystectomy

·         Laparoscopic hernia surgery

Provides the patient with a surgical plan with a minimally invasive approach to the procedure

PLASTIC AND RECONSTRUCTIVE SURGERY

·         Cosmetic surgery (i.e. blepharoplasty, rhinoplasty)

·         Craniofacial surgery

·         Burn debridement, grafting, and reconstruction

·         Repair of ligament tear

Includes assessment, evaluation, and management of, not only aesthetic/cosmetic reconstruction of non-pathologic cases, but may also include debridement and grafting of burn injuries and ligament injuries often involving the distal extremities

NEUROSURGERY

·         Craniotomy/craniectomy

·         Excision of AV malformation/intracranial tumors or abscesses

·         Spine surgery

Includes assessment, evaluation, and management of all neurosurgical cases, such as intracranial bleeds, abscesses or tumors, arteriovenous malformations, aneurysms, and some spine pathologies

ORTHOPEDIC SURGERY

·         Open and closed reduction of long bone   fractures with/without fixation

·         Spine surgery

·         Malignancies of the skeletal system

Includes assessment, evaluation, and management of all orthopedic problems, such as open/closed fractures, dislocations, congenital anomalies, and spine pathologies

PEDIATRIC SURGERY

·         Herniotomy

·         Excision biopsy

·         Incision and drainage

·         Tumor resections

Encompasses all surgical procedures conducted on any patient in the pediatric age group (0 – 14 years old)

THORACOCARDIOVASCULAR SURGERY

·         Arteriovenous fistula creation

·         Central line insertion (IJ catheter, PICC line, etc.)

·         Closed tube thoracostomy (traumatic/non-traumatic)

·         Pleurodesis

·         Thoracotomy

·         Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS)

Includes assessment, evaluation, and management of the thorax and vascular diseases.  Includes immediate management of cases involving the thoracic cavity (trauma vs non-traumatic)

UROLOGY

·         Suprapubic cystostomy

·         Cystoscopy

·         Percutaneous nephrolithotomy

·         Nephrectomy

·         Transureteral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT)

·         Transureteral resection of the prostate (TURP)

Includes assessment, evaluation, and management (surgical versus medical) of a variety of urologic diseases, including resectable renal tumors and prostate problems

that include both open and minimally invasive approaches
